Baztan Valley: The Garden of Navarra
The Baztan Valley is possibly the most authentic and stately valley in Navarra. Its perpetually green landscapes, dotted with Latxa sheep and sturdy red-stone farmhouses, have earned it the nickname of the 'Swiss Navarra'. A haven of peace and tradition just over an hour from Iturrieta.
Its capital, Elizondo, is famous for its palatial houses along the River Baztan and for being the setting of Dolores Redondo's famous 'Baztan Trilogy'. But the valley is much more: the villages of Maya, Arizkun or Erratzu; the Xorroxin waterfall; and the legends of lamias and agotes that still echo through its oak and chestnut forests.
Practical information
Elizondo
Stroll across the Txokoto bridge and admire the Arizkunenea Palace. Don't forget to try the famous hazelnut chocolate 'Urrakin-egui'.
Xorroxin Waterfall
A magical and easy hiking trail starting from Erratzu. It takes you through a fairytale forest to a spectacular waterfall.
Baztan Trilogy
If you've read Dolores Redondo's books, you'll enjoy identifying the places where Amaia Salazar's investigation takes place.
Gastronomy
Try the 'txuri-ta-beltz' (traditional black pudding) or a fine Baztan beef T-bone steak. The quality of meat in the valley is exceptional.
Agotes Quarter
In Arizkun, visit the Bozate quarter to learn about the agotes, a social group that suffered centuries of discrimination.
