Irati Forest: The Heartbeat of the Woods
The Irati Forest is a natural treasure of immeasurable value. With over 17,000 hectares, it is the second largest and best-preserved beech-fir forest in Europe, after Germany's Black Forest. A paradise for nature lovers located an hour and a half from Iturrieta.
Walking through Irati is immersing yourself in a world of sounds, colours and pure air. The forest changes dramatically with the seasons: from the intense green of spring to the explosion of ochres and reds in autumn. Its many waymarked trails lead you to discover waterfalls, reservoirs like Irabia, and corners where time seems to have stopped beneath the canopy of centuries-old trees.
Practical information
Best Season
Any time is good, but autumn (October-November) is magical for the leaf colours. In summer, the forest's coolness is a relief.
Irabia Reservoir
The circular route around the reservoir is one of the easiest and most beautiful. It's about 9 km of flat terrain under the shade of beech trees.
Access Points
There are two main entrances: via OchagavÃa (Irati Forest - Casas de Irati) or via Orbaizeta. Both offer spectacular routes.
Nature Reserve
Remember it is a protected area. Leave no trace, avoid excessive noise and respect the local wildlife and flora.
Deer Rutting
If you visit between late September and October, you can hear (and with luck see) the deer rutting, a unique natural spectacle.
Ariztokia Viewpoint
On the way to Irati, stop at this viewpoint for an impressive view of the Aezkoa valley and nearby oak groves.
