The mystery of the octagon
Santa María de Eunate is one of the most enigmatic hermitages in Spain. Built in the 12th century with a unique octagonal plan, its origin remains a mystery: it has been attributed to the Templars, the Hospitallers or even to influences from the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. Its exterior arcaded cloister of semicircular arches, separate from the main body, has no parallel in Spanish Romanesque.
Located on a lonely plain surrounded by wheat fields, the hermitage conveys an extraordinary peace. Its interior houses capitals with plant and geometric motifs of great beauty. It is a regular stop for Camino de Santiago pilgrims and a perfect place for a contemplative visit just 6 km from Iturrieta.
