San Sebastián: The Elegance of the Cantabrian Coast
San Sebastián, known as 'La Bella Easo', is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and is just over an hour from Casa Rural Iturrieta. Famous for its shell-shaped bay, its aristocratic elegance and its world-renowned gastronomy, it makes a perfect day trip for our guests.
From Chillida's Peine del Viento to the vibrant Old Town, the city offers a fascinating contrast between the classic and the modern. Its gastronomy is undoubtedly its greatest calling card: with one of the highest concentrations of Michelin stars per capita and a pintxos culture that turns every corner into a feast. Walking along La Concha at sunset is one of those experiences that stays engraved in your memory forever.
Practical information
Pintxos in the Old Town
Going for pintxos is a must. Try the cheesecake at La Viña, the mushroom at Tamboril or the prawn skewer at Goiz Argi.
Monte Igueldo
Take the 1912 wooden funicular up. The views of the bay from the top are the city's most iconic.
Peine del Viento
At the end of Ondarreta beach. It's a magical place, especially when the sea is rough and water bursts through the holes in the ground.
Shopping and Strolling
The Romantic area of the city, around the Buen Pastor Cathedral, is perfect for shopping and admiring the Belle Époque architecture.
Santa Clara Island
In summer you can take a small boat to the island in the middle of the bay. It has a small beach and a lighthouse.
Urumea Riverside Walk
Cross its monumental bridges, like the María Cristina, inspired by the bridges of Paris, to reach the centre from the station.
The three coastal jewels
- La Concha: Considered the best urban beach in Europe. Its white railing is the symbol of the city.
- La Zurriola: In the Gros neighbourhood. It's the young, surfer beach, with a more dynamic vibe and the Kursaal in the background.
- Miramar Palace: A former royal palace with gardens separating La Concha from Ondarreta. The views are incredible.
Culinary Experience
- Txakoli: The young, fruity white wine of the region. Served poured from a height, it's the ideal companion for pintxos.
- Gastronomic Societies: The social heart of the city. Although private, they define the people's love of cooking.
- Artisan Pastries: Don't leave without trying the Basque Cake or the Panchineta in the traditional pastry shops downtown.
A local's tip
"If you're looking for the perfect photo, climb Monte Urgull at sunset. It's an easy walk that culminates at the Sacred Heart. From there you'll see the entire bay, the island and the open sea in 360 degrees without the crowds of other viewpoints."
